What We Do

The Metlakatla CEM Program is an Indigenous-led resource management system uniquely designed to support Metlakatla First Nation decision-making and the needs of the Metlakatla people. Metlakatla values, ethics, and principles are taught by Metlakatla Elders and history, and guide how our program is developed and carried out. Guidance on cumulative effects methods developed through research and initiatives over the past 20 years also informed our framework and methods.

The first step in our approach to CEM is to identify and choose priority Metlakatla values in each of the five value pillars. Assessment, research and monitoring determines whether and how values are being threatened and impacted. This step also determines the current condition and future trend of values. Tiered management triggers and actions are set to define increasing levels of concern and action. When the condition of a value pass management triggers, we work with the Metlakatla community to develop and implement solutions and inform decision makers.
